Taking the kids out for a Chinese dinner has a bit of history in my family. A very, long, WIDE history and I thought I'd share a small snippet with you today.
For the longest time, Dad's go to eat out choice has been Chinese. We moved around a lot as kids but when I was 9 we lived in a small country town. My parent's owned the local milk bar (back when milk bars were the lifeblood of the community). Leon owned the best Chinese restaurant in town (FYI - it's still there) and it just happened to be up the street from us. He knew what Dad liked and we ate there often. Needless to say that for my brother and I, eating with chopsticks quite possibly at that time came more naturally than using a knife and fork. One evening we were at Leon's and a Chinese couple at another table were pointing to us trying to show their children just how the chopstick thing was done. I'm left-handed so a young child using chopsticks with her left hand (way back then) was apparently impressive.
On Saturday I was in the other seat. Trying to teach my son to use chopsticks, really just because he was showing an interest. He's right handed, both Kevin and I are left handed - it was not easy! But Brian was happy with his own technique and the san choy bow lettuce did end up in his mouth.

There are certain dishes that ONE MUST HAVE when dining in this restaurant so it was rare for us to include only one of those in our order. We did the "bring it out as it's ready, share everything" deal and it was fabulous.
There is just something about this style of eating that bonds a young family.

We always make such a mess when we take the kids out for Vietnamese - but have a great time! Looks Brian did too.

ReplyDeleteI love this story, how fun. Good for all of you knowing how to use chopsticks, we always use a fork, lol. Maybe this will inspire me to try chopsticks next time.

How is kindy going??? How are you doing with it?
It is such a nice ritual that you are now continuing with your two boys Brooke. Chinese food is one of my favourites too and we would eat it often at home with chopsticks, which is kind of fun. I'm not very good at using the chopsticks now though:) I'm glad you all had such a nice time out eating Chinese together. x
ReplyDeleteLooks like a really fun night! That photo of Brian using chopsticks is so cute :)
ReplyDeleteChinese Restaurants are one my family's rituals too! In fact we went to one in West End last night for Dad's birthday. He doesn't like spicy food so mexican and indian are out of the questions! Kate M
