Bridge over the Fitzroy River, Rockhampton, 2nd January
It seems that here in Australia, each Christmas we are watching some kind of natural disaster on our TV screens. In 2009 it was fires, now it's floods and for me this one is a little closer to home. My older brother and his family live in Rockhampton, one of the major towns effected. I last spoke to my brother on Sunday and he told me the water was 1km from their house. They were moving what they could to higher ground and have a plan if they need to evacuate. The water was already at the front gate to one of his mate's places. The Fitzroy River is due to peak tomorrow (Wednesday) and as of last night the town is completely cut off.
My whole family are crossing our fingers and toes and hoping that the next phone call bears good news. I really can't imagine how hard of a time it would be to go through this. Thankfully though my brother, sister-in-law, nephew and niece are of strong character and I know would make the best of the situation. DDKK, our thoughts are with you.
