Christmas Gift Ideas For Newborn to 3 Months

I'm documenting this for future reference, because as soon as you don't have a baby in your house you forget the most useful items!  When buying for this age group always remember they grow quickly, so if the baby you are buying for now is 3 months, best get something suitable for a 6 month old so they can grow into it.

Sophie The Giraffe Teething Toy
Sophie is perfect as a toy, squeaker and teether from birth.  Simon will vouch for me as it's his number 1 toy.  And Toys R Us (Australia) now carries them.

Sophie is not complete without the Tutim NYC Toy Sitter
When my Sister-In-Law bought Sophie for Simon, she also tracked down this toy sitter.  I had never heard of it but it is pure genius.  It is specifically designed to hold Sophie and the clever placement of snaps means it can also be looped to hold other toys and teethers.

Dymples 2 Pack Cotton Waffle Baby Wrap
At 6 months, we are still using these for Simon.  They are large at 120 x 94cm meaning you get good wear out of them.  They are also stretchy which is the perfect ingredient for getting a tight wrap and consequently a sleeping baby!

A Christmas Outfit
This is the Sprout Christmas Romper, available at Myer.  Every child needs a Christmas outfit, t-shirt and pyjamas in my opinion, but then again I think adults should have them too (not the tacky kind)!  Milk this kind of outfit for all it's worth during the holiday season.

A Bubba Mat
If the child you are buying for is a first born, chances are the parent's wont yet have a corner of the living room set aside for child play.  The Bubba Mat is a great place to lay your child down, have tummy time and later a general play mat.

The Bubba Mat is a great soft surface for all play and will last years.  We went the cheaper route, getting black foam camp matting squares.  I must say that although we can separate the squares they are much harder and not so comfortable.

A 1st Christmas Ornament
The gorgeous ornament above is from Your Keepsake Company.  You can purchase 1st Christmas ornaments everywhere but I love ones that include name, date of birth, weight and length.  We received a Precious Moments ornament for Brian's first Christmas and I love it.  Sadly, their international shipping is $63!  Shipping for the ornament above (to Australia) is $16, much nicer.

A Big Cuddly Teddy Bear
My Brother gave Brian a big cuddly teddy when he was born.  Kids generally don't do much with teddy's until they are about 2 but I think it's priceless to have a teddy from birth.  Brian's teddy is Korimco Toys brand and is big, soft, cuddly and perfect.

Bright Starts (or any other brand) links
My Mother-In-Law introduced me to these when we had Brian.  They are fantastic, both as a toy and as a "string" to prevent toys falling.  Big W often has these on sale for $5, effectively half price.

The Usborne Book of Nursery Rhymes

A Book of Nursery Rhymes
This is particularly ideal if the baby you are giving the book to is a first born.  When Brian (our first child) was born we did a little bit of a mad scramble to find the words to songs, nursery rhymes and lullabies from our own childhood.  It's great to have a comprehensive book to turn to and if it includes a CD to recall the tunes then all the better.  My parent's got us The Usborne Book of Nursery Rhymes which also has a few I had never heard of before.  If the baby's parents are into vintage at all then I'd scout a local secondhand store as older books in this genre are just too perfect.

Uncirculated Australian Baby Coin Set (2011)
The Royal Australian Mint puts out baby coin sets each year.  This is a great unique memento from the child's birth year.

FYI - I might sound like a broken record, but no I'm not affiliated or being paid by any of these companies.  Just spreading the good word of mouth vibe.

Oh thanks so much Brooke for these ideas. My friend had her baby last week 3 weeks early and I have been wondering what I could buy for him. I really love the idea of a nursery rhyme book, I'm big on books so I think I'll have to remember when I go and do some more Chrissy shopping. :)
