Hello Big Boy Room

I thought we might split this into three posts - the Big Boy Room Tour, the "setting up a child's room" and the "how to transition your child into a new room".  Today is the tour.

Big Boy Room Tour

Both Kevin and I are pretty big on saving and part of our philosophy is that in some areas you buy once.  To do this you need to think ahead; our plan is that this furniture will last Brian until he leaves home.  So we needed to think about what his needs will be in the future and what his needs are now.  We opted for a King Single bed (drilled at two heights - one for toddlers and one for adults), so teenage Brian has lots of room to move and also a simple desk that will become a place for homework later on.

The Bed - excuse the wrinkled linen.  After ironing one pillowcase I was done.  The wrinkles fall out fairly quickly on their own.

The Desk & Tallboy

We were so incredibly happy when we stumbled upon a local timber furniture manufacturer as there is just no comparison between the imported stuff they sell in retail outlets and real timber.  Martin Fine Furniture in Seventeen Mile Rocks was wonderful to deal with.  Yes, you are entering a work shop when you go, so remember that.  But the owner Phil is so passionate about what he does that you know you are in good hands.  We went with their Raven Bedroom Range, initially it's Hoop Pine, but for a small increase in price we were able to upgrade to Tasmanian Oak, a hardwood that we hope will stand up to boyish behaviour.  Although from day one Brian has been taught to respect this furniture.

On The Tallboy - A special football, tissues, box with powder/lotion/comb/spray bottle for doing hair, box with candles inside 

Big Teddy (from Uncle Shane), Stripey Teddy (from Great Nan and Great Pop) and Horsie (from Grandpa and Nana)

Donald Duck (from Grandpa and Nana) and Giraffe (from my work).  The red car isn't a permanent fixture, it was just along for the ride.

All the decorations at this stage are things that Brian received when he was born, so everything is very special and sentimental.  Brian is allowed to sleep with 3 toys at nap time (none over night) and these toys are all on his daily rotation!  We hope to add a few things to the walls shortly.  They will include porcelain letters spelling out Brian's name (another birth gift), a french number print which I'm part way through creating and a little boy illustration that I hope to buy from Etsy.
