Way back on 23rd January we officially started our Friday Movie Night. It came about for two reasons;
1. We have discovered that doing SOMETHING on Friday nights makes our weekends feel longer. And who doesn't want that?
2. A need to change our weekend routines. For the longest time it was just so easy to sit down and chill in front of a movie. We were so hopeless at coming up with outings for the weekend that we took the easy option. But by Sunday night we didn't feel relaxed and we regretted not getting out and having some fun.
So inspired by the Melzer Family Movie Nights we started our own tradition. The movie was to commence after Brian was in bed (Family Movie Night will start when he can stay up past 6pm!). Dinner MUST be eaten infront of the TV, as must the "movie themed snack".
With expanding waistlines (namely mine) and dwindling grocery budget money the "movie themed snack" turned into the "movie themed dinner". Then, sadly, no movie related food what so ever! And last night, no movie!!
So it seems our Friday Movie Night train has been derailed. But it's time to kick it back into action before The Polar Express rattles past (did you like that?). So, we have new rules. And new reasons for these rules.
Issue #1 - We snack too often. Ok, again this is me, mostly.
Resolution #1 - One bottle of lemonade (soft drink) to be consumed over the weekend, starting from Friday night. As well as one sweet treat and one savoury treat (Kevin is the sweet treat eater and I prefer savoury, this way we are both happy). Yes, this means no weekly snacking, unless it's that appetising prune cake I made for Brian...woo hoo = (
Issue #2 - By Friday night I'm buggered. That wonderful food creation I had planned just isn't going to get made, no matter what I want to tell myself.
Resolution #2 - We are borrowing a friends' tradition and Friday night is now also officially pizza night. (Aurelle, we have cut back on our pizza addiction ALOT!) Homemade of course, we can't stomach the fast food kind anymore. As for the snack, we will have possibly one themed snack/dinner per month. This will be made Thursday night or capable of being tipped out of a packet and onto a plate and planned a few weeks in advance.
Issue #3 - Family outings are minimal to zilch!
Resolution #3 - I am official "outing" co-ordinator. Kevin certainly doesn't have the time or energy to come up with ideas. They will be budget conscious outings and will happen when our weekends aren't full of the "have to do" kind of outing.
Issue #4 - What do we watch?
Resolution #4 - Movies will be pre-chosen. As we are just so slack on this, they will have to be chosen a month in advance. Thank God for box sets. They can easily cover a month!
Ok, so #3 isn't really movie related. It's more weekend enjoyment related, which is why movie night started, so it totally counts, ok?, good!
Luckily Kevin reads my blog, so he can catch up on our new hard and fast rules. There will be no cheating! So my dear blog friends you'll have to check back with me in a month and ask how the rules are going. We really do need Friday Movie Night - for our sanity.
The picture at the head of this post is our very first snack from our very first movie night way back in January. Can you guess the movie?

Movie theme nights are a great idea - but the upkeep is too much for the Tait's as well. Good luck with the new system... I am sure it will work out. Not sure what the movie was based on the dish in your pic.... but it's cute that you guys took pictures and remembered.
ReplyDeleteSounds like the perfect plan Brooke!!! xxx.
ReplyDeleteLook VERY closely at the ice cube.
ReplyDeleteBrooke, Planning does work, I hope Kevin is feeling better and in a month you can say your new rules are working for both of you. :)
ReplyDeleteThe ice cube is amazing, still it didn't help me to know the movie title. How did you do that? You are soooooooo clever.
Hey Brooke
ReplyDeleteWell I really agree with the home made Pizza thingy on a Friday Movie night. You can even have it all prepared on the Thursday so that Kevin gets a bit excited to get back home after a long week at the office. Now all Kevins needs to top it off is an ice Cold Keith's to go with that Pizza. Oh, make sure the movie is a good one because after eating that Pizza I can see Kevin stretching out and dozing off...lol Bur Great idea, should be manditory for all busy families, just to be together and relax. Aurelle
Hmm.. my guest is Pirates of the Caribbean~ let me know if I'm close. Very cute ice-cube... I didn't pick up on it the first time around~ you're soo creative.
ReplyDeleteBrooke, Does the movie topic an old man reversing back to a baby when his time is up. A true love story about B ?
ReplyDeleteThanks for all of the comments. We are looking forward to our new format movie nights starting this week!
ReplyDeleteThe answer was:
INDIANA JONES AND THE KINGDOM OF THE CRYSTAL SKULL
The ice cube is supposed to be a "crystal" skull. The drink was our favourite homestyle lemonade that unfortunately is no longer on the market = (
